home safety and security tips

The Halloween long weekend here in the Philippines is fast approaching, and you probably have plans already on how to spend it with your family. But being your most important investment, you might have some hesitations to leave your home unoccupied even for a few days. Don’t worry, Subnet Construction has prepared a list of home safety and security tips to guide you this coming Halloween.

  • Have a dog or two. Even burglar themselves consider barking dogs as good burglar deterrents. Remember, dogs are man’s best friends hence, they will do everything to protect you even your own home.
  • Always keep your valuables safe. Store all your important documents, expensive jewelry items, and money in a secure safety deposit box at home or at your local bank.
  • Lock up your home and every single thing that needs to be locked such as your doors, windows, drawers, cabinets, etc.
  • Let not the thieves know you are away. Have someone you trust keep an eye on your house or better yet, have someone stay at your home while you are gone. In this way, you can be sure as well that your pet dogs will be taken care of.
  • Open the lights at night and turn them off during daytime to make your home appear occupied. Either you can do this with a timer or have your designated caretaker do it while you are on your vacation.
  • Watchfulness is important to secure your home. Use alarms or CCTV cameras. These things are your best home defense against burglars.
  • Ensure that trees and bushes near your house are trimmed down to avoid shielding a burglar from view. This may also help your neighbors to be on the lookout in case there’s no one staying in your house while you are away.
  • Electrical wiring must be checked before you leave to prevent electrical fire. At the same time, make sure that wires are not easily accessible to avoid burglars disarming your home security system.
  • Never leave plugged devices and appliances. Never leave a ladder or any tool that burglars can use. Never leave spare keys out. Never leave notes on the door to indicate that you are not around.

Halloween might be the time when scaring each other is a form of celebration. However, when it comes to your house, burglars are the ones who should be more scared, not the homeowners. So go out and celebrate the Halloween with your loved ones and ensure that your home is safe and secure through these tips.
