It has been said time and again that a house reflects the personality of the owner. No wonder most home owners do not only invest on the house construction, they also spend a huge amount of money on the interior design of their homes.
In this special feature, Subnet Construction will provide you the different types of interior design along with pictures of our own interior design samples.
Minimalist Interior Design
This type of interior design believes that “less is more”. It is the simplest of all designs because everything is minimal. It is devoid of distractions or clutter. Its color palettes are neutral and airy. The furniture set up can include only the essential pieces as shown on our own designs below.
Contemporary Interior Design
This refers to the current design, which is modern and constantly evolving. It is neither too cold nor too formal. It includes open and cozy spaces, plenty of light, unusual layouts, neutral colors, and very light or very dark wood tones. It is often confused with the modern interior design. It is however more fluid and less adherent to one particular style. Metals and glass are popular contemporary materials and intricate details are kept to a minimum. Unlike in a modern interior design, contrast is not created with bright hues. Shades of the similar color are often used in contemporary interior design to bring about depth and variety.

Modern Interior Design
This is the type of interior design that mostly uses metal, glass, and steel. Like the minimalist design, it has no clutter or chaos. Its key attributes are as follows: (1) absence of ornament; (2) intentional asymmetry; (3) neutrals with primary colors and bold color contrasts; (4) geometric-patterned or plain area rugs; (5) furniture pieces have clean lines and basic shapes, made of materials like metal, chrome, or glass and are streamlined with polished, smooth, and sleek surfaces; (6) art, rather than accessories; and (7) open floor plans. You can see on the pictures that follow our own samples of modern interior design.
Traditional Interior Design
This type of interior design provides the feeling of warmth and comfort through colors, furniture designs, and furniture placement. A sense of order and familiarity is reflected from the architecture and the accessories. One of the signature elements of the traditional style is its use of abundant fabrics. Along with upholstered furniture, you will find a heavy hand with curtains and other window treatments. While the photo below does not exemplify a whole traditional look, you can look at the headboard and the bedside table that are both inspired by the classic traditional design.
Mid-Century Modern Interior Design
This is a tribute to the design of the mid-1900s, particularly the 1950s and 1960s. Its usual color palette is in hues of orange, yellow, green, and brown. It is often characterized by clean, simple lines, and plenty of wood and rusty metals. Some of the furniture inspired by this type of interior designs include the Elton arm chair, wood dining chairs, and wood or upholstered platform beds, as shown on our own designs below.
Country Interior Design
This is the most homey among all types of interior design because it is typically light, enjoys plenty of natural wood, and gives an aura of a cozy feel. Its main style elements often includes: (1) all white look; (2) dominant fireplace; (3) large kitchen and dining place; (4) pen shelves and cabinets; (5) cozy fabrics, natural materials and textiles; (6) vintage, reclaimed, or heritage accessories; (7) vintage, shabby chic furniture with a rustic flair; (8) even ceilings with exposed reclaimed beams; (9) barn doors; (10) absence of glass; and (11) wide plank floors. This style has its root in different traditions like English, French, or Tuscan. A French country design, for example, may include soft and warm tones of red, yellow or gold, and natural materials like stone and brick.
Transitional Interior Design
This is a fusion of the classic traditional and the contemporary modern design. It features solid furniture items of a larger size with focus on comfort, typical for traditional interiors. The lack of too much ornamentation and the clear restriction in number celebrates the minimalist trends of the contemporary style. Curves meet straight lines here. Traditional sofas and chairs are upholstered in modern fabrics and prints. Its key attributes are: (1) limited use of accessories; (2) use of impactful art as focal points; (3) neutral color palette; and (4) textural elements such as wood, glass, lacquer, rattan, fabric, steel, and metal.
Scandinavian Interior Design
This type of interior design is inspired by the snow, mountains, and fjords of the Nordic countries. Its design elements are as follows: (1) predominantly white; (2) bright colors combine with the main white color; (3) large mirrors; (4) principles of symmetry; (5) furniture pieces are functional and stylish but not too trendy and contemporary; (6) use of light colored wood and warm colors, and (7) light wood flooring dressed up with rugs in subtle color. Scandinavian furniture design often feels like a work of art, although it is simple and understated. Spacious, natural lighting, less accessories, and functional furniture often characterizes Scandinavian designs.
Coastal Interior Design
Inspired by the beach and the ocean, the Coastal interior design is light, breezy, and nautically themed. Common features include light, airy color palettes with cool neutral shades paired with blues and greens, and materials that are reminiscent of summer. Blue and white striped patterns for pillows, large windows, white plush sofas, and painted white wood are also popular for this type of design.
